Here’s a practical guide to keeping your inventory rust-free this rainy season.
Why Rust Is a Bigger Risk in the Monsoon
TMT bars are engineered for strength and ductility, but like any steel product, prolonged exposure to moisture accelerates oxidation. During monsoon months, three factors combine to raise the risk:
- High humidity keeps a thin film of moisture on exposed steel surfaces even when it isn’t actively raining
- Temperature fluctuations between day and night cause condensation on stacked bars
- Poor ventilation in enclosed storage traps damp air against the steel
Surface rust that forms during storage isn’t necessarily a defect in the steel — but if left untreated, it can lead to pitting, which does affect performance and, just as importantly, affects how the material looks to your customers on delivery.
Storage Best Practices
1. Keep Steel Off the Ground
Never store TMT bars, billets, or wire coils directly on soil or a bare warehouse floor. Use raised wooden sleepers, concrete platforms, or steel racks at least 6–8 inches above ground level. This prevents ground moisture and rainwater pooling from reaching your stock.
2. Cover, But Don’t Seal
Use waterproof tarpaulins or PVC sheets to cover stacked material, but avoid wrapping it airtight. Sealed plastic traps humidity inside and can actually worsen condensation. Leave the sides slightly open or use breathable covers to allow airflow.
3. Stack Smart
Store bars of the same diameter and grade together, and avoid overly tall stacks that make inspection difficult. Leave gaps between bundles for air circulation, and keep aisles clear so you can check the health of stock regularly without disturbing the whole pile.
4. Choose the Right Storage Location
Where possible, store inventory under a roofed shed rather than in the open. If a covered facility isn’t available, position stacks away from low-lying areas prone to waterlogging, and ensure proper drainage around the storage yard.
5. Rotate Stock (FIFO)
Follow a First-In-First-Out approach so older stock doesn’t sit in storage through multiple rain spells. Faster turnover means less cumulative moisture exposure.
6. Inspect Weekly During Monsoon
Set a routine — weekly during peak monsoon months — to check for early signs of surface moisture or discoloration. Catching it early means a simple wipe-down instead of a bigger cleanup later.
7. Handle Wire Coils and Stirrups Separately
Binding wires and stirrups have a higher surface-area-to-volume ratio than TMT bars, making them more prone to visible surface rust. Store them indoors wherever possible, ideally on shelving rather than the floor.
What to Do If You Spot Surface Rust
Light surface rust on TMT bars is common and does not indicate a compromised product — Maithan TMT is manufactured to IS code standards for strength and durability. If you notice surface oxidation:
- Wipe down bars with a dry or lightly oiled cloth before dispatch
- Avoid wire brushing aggressively, which can mark the ribbed surface
