TMT Bar Sizes and Their Applications in Construction

by Maithan Steel | Posted on October 13, 2026October 13, 2026

When you walk into a hardware shop to buy TMT bars, the first question the shopkeeper asks is “kitna mm chahiye?” And honestly, most people don’t have a clear answer — they just buy whatever the mason tells them to. But knowing why a particular size is used where can save you money, stop you from over-ordering, and make sure your structure actually gets the strength it needs.

At Maithan Steel, we manufacture TMT bars across all standard sizes — from 8mm to 25mm — using Concast & Thermex HYQST technology at our integrated plant in Salanpur, West Bengal. Each size has a specific job on a construction site. Here’s a size-by-size breakdown.

TMT Bar Sizes and Their Application

8mm TMT Bar

The 8mm bar is the smallest commonly used size in everyday construction. It doesn’t carry heavy structural load on its own, but the supporting role it plays is just as important as the main bars.

Where it’s used:

  • Stirrups — the ring-shaped bars that hold main bars together in beams and columns
  • Distribution bars in slabs
  • Boundary and compound walls
  • Footpaths and staircases
  • Light lintels above doors and windows

For a small home or a single-storey structure, 8mm Maithan Steel bars are usually paired with a thicker size for the main reinforcement, while the 8mm handles the binding work.

10mm TMT Bar

10mm sits between “supporting” and “main” reinforcement. It’s strong enough to take on moderate loads but still easy to bend and handle on site, which is why masons are comfortable working with it.

Where it’s used:

  • Slabs in residential buildings
  • Columns in low-rise (G+1, G+2) structures
  • Small beams and balconies
  • Sunshades and chajjas

For an independent house, a good part of the slab reinforcement usually comes down to 10mm Maithan Steel bars, especially in sections that don’t carry the full weight of the structure.

12mm TMT Bar

This is probably the most commonly bought size for individual home construction in India, and for good reason — it balances cost and strength well. If a mason simply says “standard bar,” there’s a good chance he means 12mm.

Where it’s used:

  • RCC slabs
  • Beams and columns of residential buildings
  • Footings
  • Medium-rise housing projects

Most 2–3 storey homes today use 12mm Maithan Steel bars as their primary reinforcement size, usually combined with 8mm bars for stirrups.

16mm TMT Bar

Once you move into apartment buildings, commercial complexes, or anything taller than 3–4 floors, 16mm becomes the go-to size. It carries heavier loads over longer spans without needing an excessive number of bars.

Where it’s used:

  • Columns in high-rise buildings
  • Load-bearing beams
  • Parking structures and basements
  • Commercial and multi-storey buildings

16mm Maithan Steel bars are common in the main columns of apartment complexes, where each column supports several floors stacked above it.

20mm TMT Bar

20mm bars step in when a structure has to deal with serious stress — bridges, flyovers, large commercial or industrial buildings. This size resists bending and stays stable even under high load.

Where it’s used:

  • Bridge decks and flyovers
  • Large industrial floors
  • Heavy columns and beams
  • Big commercial complexes

Engineers typically specify 20mm Maithan Steel bars where the safety margin has to stay high and bar failure simply isn’t an option.

25mm TMT Bar

25mm is the heavyweight of this list, reserved for large-scale infrastructure work. Handling it needs proper site machinery, since these bars are considerably thicker and heavier than everything else here.

Where it’s used:

  • Dams and major bridges
  • Power plants and large industrial units
  • Foundations and raft footings of skyscrapers
  • Mega infrastructure projects

Wherever you see 25mm Maithan Steel bars going into a project, it’s almost always a large government or infrastructure job, not a residential one.

Quick Reference: Which Size For Which Project

  • Independent houses (G, G+1): 8mm, 10mm, 12mm
  • Apartments and offices (G+2 to G+4): 12mm, 16mm, 20mm
  • Bridges, flyovers, industrial structures: 20mm, 25mm

32 mm TMT Bars for Heavy Construction

32 mm TMT bars are designed for heavy-duty construction projects that require high strength and load-bearing capacity. They are commonly used in large infrastructure projects, including bridges, flyovers, skyscrapers, metro and railway projects, dams, reservoirs, power plants, and highways. Their suitability depends on the structural design and engineering requirements of the project.

  • Bridges / Flyovers
  • Skyscrapers
  • Metro / Railway Projects
  • Dams & Reservoirs
  • Power Plants
  • Roads & Highways

Why the Right Size Matters

Using the wrong size doesn’t just waste money — a bar too thin for the load it’s carrying can compromise the whole structure, while an oversized bar on a small job is money spent for nothing. This is exactly where a structural engineer’s calculation should guide the decision, not just a mason’s guess.

Whatever size your project needs, Maithan Steel bars go through the same quality process — ribbed for better concrete grip, hardened through HYQST technology, and tested for high strength with easy bendability. The size changes from project to project, but the quality standard doesn’t.
